My Journey to My Mat

Hi Friends

It has be2016-03-27 11.25.25en far too long since I have written and even longer since I penned a “real” post.  As you may have noticed, I became quite busy with product reviews but that’s a story for another time.

Today, I would like to share my journey back to my mat.  My yoga mat, that is.

Back in January, I went in for my usual yearly check up with my family Dr.  Now I love her, she has always been very helpful and given my concerns the appropriate amount of attention but I was not ready for what she had to tell me.

I like to think I am relatively healthy.  I don’t binge regularly or emotionally eat like I did when I was younger.  I do enjoy life though.  Clearly between my busy and high stress new work assignment and my indulgences, my health was suffering in ways I was not aware of.

She dropped the O bomb…obese.  She said I was overweight and wanted to know what I had changed to cause my recent weight gain.  I couldn’t think of anything on the spot so we tested my thyroid.  When the blood work came back normal, I had to face the truth.  My health was not as good as I thought.  She told me she would like to see me lose 5-10 pounds and felt my most recent ailments might improve.

More than a little disgruntled, I went home to lick my wounds.  No, I did not drown my sorrows in a tub of Ben and Jerry’s.  I got up the next day and headed to the gym.  I signed up and did an evaluation with a trainer.  We set up a program that worked for me but just wasn’t exciting.  I hate cardio, I hate running but I was determined to do it because  my health is important.

I found the gym had 4 yoga classes a week during my available times so I decided that I would attend all that I could and then workout 3 times a week.  The first yoga class was hard.  I had not practiced in 5 years.  I survived it though and I felt good afterwards.

My next class was much easier and I learned that muscle memory rocks!  I felt like I had never left my practice.  After a couple weeks, I found myself looking forward to yoga more than my workouts.  After 6 weeks of sticking to my schedule, I wanted more.  I wanted to feel the way I did on my mat every time I exercised.  I remembered trying hot yoga years ago and enjoying it.  A friend recommended a local place that had $5 community classes.  I figured it couldn’t hurt, it’s just one class, no commitment.  I am not going to lie, the class was HOT and hard!  Here was the challenge I was looking for.  I signed up for a 40 day pass wondering if I would use it much.  If I used it even 3 times in the 40 days, it would have paid for itself.

In 40 days, I used it 26 times! I have since become a community member. I found myself wanting to go all the time.  Not in a frantic way, just in a peaceful, I love the way I feel after a class way.  The instructors have all been terrific and I have grown so much in my practice already. When I enter the studio, I feel like I am home.  My outlook on life has always been very yogi-like but I had no idea how great I would feel making yoga a daily part of my life.

I hit my mat 6-7 days per week….yes you read that right.  Days I don’t practice, I sometimes have trouble sleeping.  I do a couple days per week of non-heated yoga at my gym and then I go to hot yoga the rest of the time.  I learn something different from each instructor.

I have lost weight, lost pain, lowered my blood pressure and gained strength!  I feel very different already than I did when I began.  I hope that I never lose my need to practice.  I am much more mindful of what I eat and no longer crave junk.  Your eating habits and mindset truly change when you bring yoga into your life.  You start to see ways you hold yourself back, we are our own worst enemies sometimes.

The other night was the ultimate experience in my journey.  I was on my mat, in warrior 2, watching the sweat roll off my arms.  I felt…..beautiful and strong.  I felt like I was enough and I belonged exactly where I was at that moment.  It was the first time I truly felt beautiful that had nothing to do with the exterior body or outside influences.  In that moment, it was just me and my mat, even though I was surrounded by people.  I will never forget that.  I wish everyone could experience that feeling, it is truly life changing.

The only thing is, I *may* have a mat obsession, although with hot yoga, it’s good to have multiple mats and lots of yoga clothes!

I hope this is only the beginning of a lifelong journey to my mat.

NeoCell Beauty Bursts – Supplement Review

Share Button

2016-01-20 17.54.13Hi Friends

I recently had the opportunity to review a supplement from NeoCell called Beauty Bursts.  I was intrigued by the name and wanted to learn more.

Beauty Bursts are chewable supplements containing Collagen Type  1 & 3, Hyaluronic Acid and Vitamin C.  Now I have used these things on my skin as an exterior anti-aging regimen but had never thought of nourishing my skin from the inside.

First of all, these Beauty Bursts have a pleasant berry flavour and they are about the consistency of Starburst candy.

2016-01-20 17.56.16In fact, each chew comes wrapped in foil.  They are even light pink in colour.

There are 60 bursts in a package and you take 2 chews per day. This works out as a month’s supply.

Since using this supplement, I have noticed my skin is more elastic and my nails have been growing much quicker than usual.  My face looks younger and my skin has a healthy glow.

The biggest difference that I was not expecting is that my lips feel softer and fuller.

I have to say I really enjoy this supplement.  I take it twice a day so it feels like a treat.  They are not sugary but they are sweet.  I will continue to take these supplements as I am very pleased with the results so far.

Sweetsation Therapy’s Precious Anti-Aging Facial Oil

2015-12-20 14.26.27

Hi Friends

I recently had the opportunity to try out a new facial oil from a company I have worked with before, Sweetsation Therapy.  It is an organic anti-aging facial oil loaded with natural quality ingredients such as Argan Oil and Vitamin C.

This Facial Oil comes beautifully packaged with a practical eye dropper style lid.
It has a subtle rose scent because of the Rose Hip Oil in it.
The recommendations say to apply 3-5 drops to face.  I found that 2 did the trick for me as a little goes a long way.  This means that this 30mL bottle will last for awhile.
I apply it as my moisturizer step in my skin care routine, after cleansing, exfoliation and perfecting. It absorbs very well into my skin with no oily residue.

2015-12-21 13.08.18
This formula is organic and so is very gentle on your skin.  I had no irritation with use.  The main ingredient is organic argan oil which is a very versatile oil used to moisture hair skin and nails.
I was very pleased with this quality product and feel it is a great value.

Dark IllusionDark Illusion by Dana Moison
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Dana Moison certainly titled this book appropriately!
It is truly a Dark Illusion in more ways than one.
This psychological thriller is a wild ride. Every time you think you have the story figured out, you are faced with a new twist!
Kelly Danes is an Editor in Chief for Inner Beauty Magazine which is ironic on it’s own as the story progresses. She has some peculiarities about her and a secret to hide.
Gloria McIntyre is a gorgeous model, some call her the most beautiful woman in the word.
Andy Swain is a photographer looking to make Gloria his muse.
Sharon Davis is a detective determined to solve the mystery behind a serial killer on the loose whose victims are all beautiful young women.
What could they possibly have in common?
Well I will not give anything away however this story is one that keeps you riveted, wanting to know what will happen next.
This story has it all, glamour, intrigue, betrayal, jealousy and murder.
Will Sharon have the answers before it’s too late?
Dark Illusion is an edge of your seat read that you will enjoy from cover to cover.

Embrace Your Face ~ CoverGirl

Hi Friends

I recently had the opportunity to review a product from CoverGirl’s new Embrace Your Face campaign at no cost, courtesy of CoverGirl.

I choose the TruBLEND foundation in Classic Ivory.

2015-11-16 19.32.40TruBLEND boasts that you will get a perfect skin tone match with seamless blending.  With 14 shades to choose from, you are bound to find the right shade for you.

The first thing I noticed was the bottle.  I love the design.  It is very eye catching and the dispensing pump is so handy.  It dispenses just the right amount right onto my makeup applicator or hand.

I use a sponge blender when applying my make up for best coverage and blending results.

Now I have to admit that I am not usually a fan of a liquid foundation. I always found it looked fake or caked on my skin.  They always felt heavy and left me feeling greasy.

2015-11-17 21.44.20-2I have to say, TruBLEND exceeded all of my expectations.  The foundation went on flawlessly and felt very light on my skin.  I actually forgot I was wearing it.

The finish on my face made me feel “air brushed”.  I had a perfectly even skin tone that was bright and natural looking.

Since trying TruBLEND, I wear it regularly and am pleased with the results. I have had compliments on my skin and it gives a much more polished look once I have applied my make up.

There are no unpleasant odours and my skin has not reacted in any negative way.  I have had no break outs like I have had with other liquid make up.

TruBLEND is a great option for women looking for a  natural and flawless look.  It really blends well to match your skin tone.

Goodreads Review: Blind Mission by Avichai Schmidt

Blind Mission: A Thrilling Espionage NovelBlind Mission: A Thrilling Espionage Novel by Avichai Schmidt
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

I love a good espionage book.
Blind Mission really delivered everything I like in a solid espionage novel.
I found every answer raised even more questions in this tale as we follow Dan Greenberg on one roller coaster of a journey upon finding that he has no ID, no car and is a wanted man – in more ways than one.
I love that this book allowed the reader to make connections without spoon feeding the plot. There are times where at first you may not be sure which character is being talked about and then you get the aha moment when you realize again they are talking about Dan.
Dan is a master of disguise, escape and he is incredibly resourceful.
When you realize who is pulling the strings, you understand the importance of Dan’s mission and wonder if he would have played into their hands had he known the identity of his puppet master.
At times, you start to wonder who is playing whom.
Dan, it appears, may be more than the organization bargained for.
For lots of twists and turns and an altogether great tale of espionage, Blind Mission does not disappoint.

The Revenge of Adam Defoe: Betrayal & Suspense Fiction (Mystery & Crime)The Revenge of Adam Defoe: Betrayal & Suspense Fiction by Evgeny Levin
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

If you like stories of revenge, this is one of the most satisfying I have read.
Dr. Levin has crafted a story of twists, turns and decadent revenge.
Get through the back story in the first few chapters to dive into the action!
The premise is that a group of friends start to pull apart at the seams. Have you ever had a friend that has too much luck? Everything seems to come easily to them with little effort?
This is how Jacob, Avi and Ronnie feel about their friend Yoav. He has a beautiful fiancee, lots of money and a new promotion and it seems like just too much for the others to stomach.
They plot their revenge, taking fate into their own hands in an attempt to break his cycle of luck with a disturbing plot against him.
Will they succeed in their scheme?
Will Yoav retaliate?
To find out all the answers and untangle this web of intriguing circumstances, check out this book.

Goodreads Review Shane Hall’s Reverb

Reverb (Feedback, #2)Reverb by Shane Hall
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Shane Hall has once again blown my mind with the second installment of the Feedback Series.
I am left waiting for book 3 in eager anticipation!
We pick right up with where we left off in Book 1: Impulse. I strongly recommend you read that first because you need to background information to get enjoyment out of Reverb.
I really enjoyed the character development. Characters that we had glimpses of in Impulse were revealed in Reverb.
The book is a quick read and very enjoyable. It is fast paced and full of some interesting twists and turns. Just when you think you have something or someone figured out, you are turned sideways with startling realizations and unexpected events.
One thing I really commend Hall on is not forgetting his premise. We are reminded of the fact that the characters live in a soundless world again and again in a very natural way which keeps the reader tied to the plot lines.
For an entertaining read, I highly recommend the Feedback series. You will enjoy the ride!

GoodRead Review: Oasis by Dima Zales

Oasis (The Last Humans, #1)Oasis by Dima Zales
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

If you were to ask me what my favourite genre of book to read is, hands down it would be dystopian.
I was hooked from the very beginning of the novel when we meet Theo and he is not sure if he is going insane, has an imaginary friend or some sort of ghost talking in his ear and reading his thoughts all of the time named Phoe, pronounced “Fi”.
The book takes the reader on so many twists and turns, it is hard to put down. I read it in one day because I just had to know what was happening next!
The premise is that they live in Oasis. The Earth has been destroyed due to the rapidly advancing technology that society could not keep up with and has become The Goo, a jello like terrain that does not look appetizing at all. The people in Oasis are the only survivors and have found a better way to live thanks to nanocytes.
There are Youths, Adults and Elders and you become an adult at 40. There is no swearing, vulgarity and you do not ask questions as that will earn you some time in Quietude in the Witch’s Prison.
Zales has carefully crafted an incredible world that becomes more and more fascinating as you work your way through the story.
By the end, I was absolutely stunned at the truth of Oasis and I was left wanting so much more of these characters and the story.
I will definitely be checking out the next installment of Oasis!

Beauty By Earth ~ Beauty with a Conscience

Share Button

2015-12-01 17.32.45Hi Friends

Recently, I had the opportunity to review products from a company called Beauty by Earth. I am excited to share with you what I learned by using their products.

They feature eco-friendly packaging, natural, organic and vegan products with no chemicals added.

I love that this company takes eco responsibility to a whole new level.  You can feel the quality in their products and see the results for  yourself.

On their website, this phrase caught my eye and resonated “inspire beauty, naturally”.

2015-12-01 18.14.16The first product I tried was the lip balm.

I love a good lip balm, especially in winter when I suffer from dry, chapped and peeling lips.

I always have lip balm on hand because I constantly feel the need to reapply it.

This lip balm is the softest I have ever tried!  It glides on smoothly and stays put.  I find I do not need to apply that often as my lips feel soft all day.

Can I also mention the flavours? My favourite is the Vanilla Bean, followed by Asian Pear but they also have Green Tea, Goji Berry, Grapefruit Pomengranite, Honey and Peppermint.

I was also happy to find there was an unflavoured option for my hubby who also suffers from chapped lips but does not want any flavour.

2015-12-01 19.29.25-12015-12-01 19.29.27-4The next product I tried was the toner.

It has witch hazel and aloe in it which cleanses and soothes.

I love the smell of it thanks to the rosewater.

This toner is gentle and effective, providing a deep clean without irritating my skin.

It also pulls double duty as an effective make up remover.

It comes in a traditional bottle with a flip lid and a round bottle with a spray cap which is perfect for using as a refresher throughout the day.

2015-12-01 19.29.27-2The Argan Oil is 100% organic and pure.

There is no filler and it shows in the difference in quality between it and argan “hair treatments” I have tried that contained many different chemicals.

A little drop goes a long way with this formula.  One drop will work through my long hair after a shower or cover my whole face after cleansing.

You can also use Argan Oil on your hands to keep them soft and smooth no matter how dry and cold the weather gets.

2015-12-01 19.29.27-1The konjac sponge pack of two comes with a white sponge that is 100% konjac and a black sponge that contains 99% konjac and 1% charcoal for acne prone skin.

These sponges are well made and work very effectively.  You do need to soak them prior to their first use for up to a minute.  The best part of these sponges is that they are biodegradable as compost.

I also got to try their amazing mask, facial sunscreen and sunscreen.

2015-12-01 19.29.27-32015-12-01 19.29.26-12015-12-01 19.29.25-2

This company has really wowed me.  I will continue to order from them in the future.  I love that the products are natural.  These are beauty products  I can feel good about using.  They are good for my skin and the environment.

For more information about Beauty By Earth, you can visit their website or their Amazon store
